I’m Sorry, But You’ve Been Lied To
Do you realize that much of what you’ve been told about health and wellness is not true?
Let’s face it, there’s a lot of money being spent on “health care” these days, yet the outcomes don’t seem to be too promising. According to a 2007 report by The Commonwealth Fund*, Americans spend more on health care than any country in the world; aside from Australians, Americans have the highest rates of chronic diseases; and the diseases are not being treated properly.
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS? The truth is that we could go in circles for days trying to find a culprit, but that really wouldn’t change much. The only thing that you can change is you. Are you willing to take power over your health into your own hands?
5 Lies That Will Leave You Dead
Lie 1: Mammograms Prevent Breast Cancer
Every year we are told that mammograms are the key to increasing breast cancer survival rates, but does the evidence support this? The truth is that mammograms are radiation, and few people would debate that exposure to radiation can be carcinogenic.
In his book, The Politics of Cancer, Samuel S. Epstein, M.D. states that the breasts of premenopausal women are highly sensitive to radiation. He estimates that there is up to a 1% increased risk of breast cancer for each rad unit or radiation absorbed dose of X-ray exposure. This means that there was a “up to a 20% increased cancer risk for a woman who, in the 1970s, received 10 annual mammograms of an average two rads each.” He goes on to say that “in spite of this, up to 40% of women over 40 have had mammograms since the mid-1960s, some annually and some with exposures of 5 to 10 rads in a single screening from older, high-dose equipment.”

It's important to know exactly what you are putting into your body.
Lie 2: If You Can Buy it at a Grocery Store, it is Safe to Eat
Just because something is approved for human consumption, it doesn’t mean that it is good for you.
I’m not just talking about gaining weight or getting cavities from eating too many sweets. There are some chemicals in everyday foods that can have detrimental effects on your health- including but not limited to neurological problems, depression, gastrointestinal issues, and even birth defects.
You have to protect yourself and your family; no one is going to do it for you.
Lie 3: Sunlight Exposure Will Give You Cancer
When summertime hits, many people slather themselves in sunscreen that contains toxic chemicals, while simultaneously covering up with large hats, shades, and umbrellas. We are afraid of the sun, and why wouldn’t we be? All we hear about is how dangerous it is.
While there are risks to unhealthy amounts of sun exposure, the truth is that exposure to the sun helps your body produce Vitamin D. Vitamin D is important for protecting against many types of cancer, depression, the flu, and many other illnesses. Most people are vitamin D deficient.
So if I was afraid of getting cancer, I’d run away from processed foods, toxic beauty products, harmful cleaning supplies, and radiation exposure before I’d run away from the beautiful sun.
Lie 4: If A Doctor Recommends Surgery, it is Medically Necessary

You are your own best advocate.
Surgery has saved countless lives, and improved the quality of life for many people. However, that doesn’t erase the fact that sometimes surgery is recommended for reasons of convenience, lack of awareness, or monetary gain.
In the January 2011 issue of Arthritis Care & Research, it was mentioned that doctors are recommending drugs and surgery for osteoarthritis, instead of recommending exercise and weight loss. The study authors conclude that many patients with this condition would greatly benefit from this simple recommendation, and surgery should be a latch ditch approach.
In Death By Medicine, Gary Null, PhD estimates the number of unnecessary medical and surgical procedures to be 7.5 million a year. Women are especially at risk for unnecessary surgery. In Health In The 21st Century, Fransisco Contreras, MD, says that 27% of the women who have hysterectomies don’t need them. Cesarean sections are also on the rise. In fact, it’s the most common surgical procedure in the US.
Never assume that because your doctor recommends a procedure it is necessary. Always get a second opinion and always stay informed about your options.
Lie 5: Your Doctor Always Has Your Best Interests in Mind
Your doctor may have you best interest in mind, but you are your best advocate.
Let’s face it, insurance regulations and fear of lawsuits sometimes binds hands. So sometimes what is best for you is not necessarily allowed. Also, keep in mind that doctors are like everyone else- some of them are liars and some of them are not. Your best bet in protecting your safety is to be an informed consumer.
Besides, doctors can’t know everything. They don’t have time to be well versed on the latest research about every issue that pertains to you and your family. Many don’t even have time to be knowledgeable about the basics such as the role of proper nutrition for health benefits.
